The particulars of Organisation its functions and duties
National Dairy Research Institute is one of the premier Institute of Dairying.  It was established in 1923 as an Imperior  Institute of Animal Husbandry and Dairying at Bangalore.  In 1955, the Institute Headquarter was shifted to Karnal and it was rechristened as National Dairy Research Institute. The Institute was brought under the wings of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research Council in 1966 in order to provide greater operational autonomy in research management functions. The formal Dairy Technology course was started in India at NDRI in 1957.

An important milestone in the history of NDRI was added in 1989 when the Institute was conferred the status of Deemed University for further strengthening the academic programmes for human resource development. The Institute has two regional stations, Bangalore in South and Kalyani in Eastern India.

The organisation is headed by Director who is supported by Joint Director (Research), Joint Director (Academic) and Joint Director (Admn.) There are 13 Research and teaching Divisions/Sections and 15 support sections. The Institute conducts research in the area of dairy production, dairy processing and management. The Institute being a deemed University, offers under graduate and post graduate academic programmes leading to B.Tech, (Dairy Technology), Masters programme in Animal  Breeding and Genetics, Animal Nutrition, Animal Physiology, Animal Biotechnology , Dairy Chemistry, Animal Biochemistry, Animal Reproduction, Gynecology and Obstretics, Dairy Microbiology, Dairy Technology, Dairy Engineering, D. Extn., Dairy Eonomics, Doctral Programmes i various subjects are all offered.  At SRS, Bangalore Diploma in Dairy Technology   and in ERS Kalyani Diploma in Animal Husbandry and Dairying,  are offered.  The research Divisions are headed by Head of Division and Regional Stations are headed by Head of Station


The powers and duties of its officers and employees
Joint Director (Research) is responsible for execution of research in the field of dairying while Joint Director (Academic) performs responsibility of academic programmes of the NDRI, Deemed University.  Joint Director (Admn.) is overall responsible for administration.  Heads of Divisions is responsible for execution of research, teaching and extension programmes of the concerned division.


The procedures followed in the decision making process including channels of supervision and accountability
The decision making process is decided on the basis of recommendations of Board of Management, Academic Council, Research Advisory Committee and Extension Council. These recommendations are implemented through Joint Directors and diffferent divisions/sections of the Institute. The research Divisions/sections are accountable to Joint Directors. Joint Directors are accountable to Director.


The norms set by it for the discharge of its functions
National Dairy Research Institute comes under ICAR which is an autonomous organisation.  However, rules of Govt. of India are applicable Mutatis Mutandis to ICAR employees.


The  rules  regulation  instruction manuals and records help by it or under its control or used by its employees for discharging its function
  • ARS rules are applicable to Scientific staff.
  • TSR rules  applicable to  Technical  Staff
  • Govt. of India rules are  applicable to administrative staff

Members from the public are member of Board of Management., whose views are taken into account in decision making process

 Some of the documents such as Annual report, NDRI Newsletter, Telephone directory are available in electronic for and are loaded on Institute web-site.  These can be downloaded.


The particulars of facilities available to citizens  for  obtaining  information including the working hours of a  library or reading room. If maintained for public use
library services are being rendered exclusively for the faculty members, staff members and students of the institute. However, users of sister ICAR institutes, State Agricultural universities and other universities/organisations may use library services after taking proper permission for their study/research work. The library remains open on all working days from 9.00 A.M to 6.00 P.M and 9.00 AM to 2.00 P.M on Sundays and other gazetted holidays at present.  Library remains closed on the three national holidays i.e Republic Day, Independence day and Gandhi Jayanti
